The concept of place, and our connections to place, are powerful expressions in how we view our world. The Black Church at Búðir is one such location, that for me, expresses a powerful sense of place and identity. On a recent past blog post I wrote about this church located on a windswept point in a harsh landscape For me the church emotes a sense of hope, civility, and simple community which I think is a fitting concept for a Christmas Eve post.
Kerlingarfjöll is located in the central highlands of Iceland, north of Geysir, and nestled between the Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers. It is a landscape of incomparable beauty, with mountains painted by the remnants of winter snow, that rise up from a barren volcanic plain.
My experience in Iceland surfaces frequently in my memory. It is like a constant shadow that tags along on a sunny day. I try not to get to high or low about trips, or to set any expectations for that matter, simply to set aside any possibility of disappointment or preconceptions. I like to plan, but then set that aside in my subconscious, so I can just be open to the experience. The fact is this trip totally blew away my preconceptions as we traversed the island from waterfalls to glacial lagoons, with each bend in the road revealing another stunning location. Rain or shine did not matter. In every cloak it wore Iceland was beautiful.
As a follow up to my last two posts here is a two-frame horizontal panorama shot on location just outside of Crested Butte, Colorado. Though I like the color variations, there is just something perfect about a black and white. I framed this as a panorama to give more depth and vastness to the mountains and the cloud-filled sky.
The temperature at my 6:45 wake-up read 5 degrees. With the slightly windy conditions the wind chill came to -10. What on earth was I thinking? And not only that I had convinced my pal, Adam Holston, to sally forth into the cold with me. Even bundled up with layers we both felt the cold seep in until we could no longer feel our fingers. This was really a one shot deal for me. I had already plotted the location of the rising sun and I simply needed to be in position a few minutes before the sun hit the horizon. It could not come quick enough though as my 30 minutes on the bridge scouting the shot turned me into an iceberg, even as the ballhead on my tripod locked up from the cold. As the light came I grabbed one shot for the shadow areas and several sun star shots and the event was over. And then we were quickly to the car and Mellow Moods for coffee.
TECHNICAL: Fuji GFX 50s and a Fujinon GF 32-64 f4 R WR at 34mm. Two images were shot to create the final rendering-one at f11 for 1/4 of a second and the other at f16 for 1/8 of a second, both at ISO 100. The two files were corrected in Lightroom and combined using Luminosity Masks in Photoshop CC
The Diagonal Line is a line of energy and movement. It is a line that slices diagonally through an image and leads the eye into the frame. You can use them to create a strong impression of movement or you can use them to create a tremendous sense of depth.
