Hi everyone. Please save the date, and join me for our 2017 Spring in the West Virginia Highlands Photography Workshop, June 8th through the 11th, 2017. This is an exciting workshop in the beautiful Potomac Highlands region of West Virginia. We will be exploring and photographing a diverse landscape that includes expansive mountain top vistas to intimate waterfalls. In between our field sessions we will feature classroom presentations on image processing in Lightroom and Photoshop.
This Workshop Is Limited to 8 Participants
I will be basing our trip from the beautiful Canaan Valley Resort. This centralized location gives us access to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the West Virginia Highlands including Black Water Falls, Dolly Sods, and the Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge. We will be chasing the light in the early morning and late afternoon to evening. In the middle of the day we will work on Lightroom and Photoshop techniques at the resort. (Note: I will send a Registration Code for the Canaan Valley Resort to each participant, as well as update this page when that is completed.)
We will start Thursday afternoon, 2:00 PM, June 6th with a meeting at the Resort. This will give us time to get to know each other and discuss the things you would like to work on. We will be going out to a sunset location that evening. Then it is up early on Friday morning to shoot the sunrise. Once back at the resort we can download files and start looking at the various Lightroom and Photoshop techniques to help you bring out your files. We will also discuss and work on our field techniques for composition, and capturing the beautiful quality of light of this area. Then it will be back into the field for the afternoon and sunset. Saturday morning starts early again and follows a similar path as Friday. We will end or trip with a sunrise shoot on Sunday morning.
We will be based out of the beautiful Canaan Valley Resort. Lodging Instructions will be set once we open the workshop for registration.
What to Bring
You will need to bring your DSLR and a selection of lenses ranging from wide-angle to telephoto. A tripod is a must as we will be working with some long exposures. You will also need a polarizing filter and a selection of solid and split neutral density filters is also recommended. Don't forget to bring extra batteries, CF or SD Cards, battery charger and a remote release. Please having a good working knowledge of your camera and its menus. We will working primarily in Manual Mode throughout this workshop.
You will also need a laptop loaded with the most current version of Lightroom and Photoshop and have a good working basic knowledge of how to use them. Our group room at the resort will supply cables and internet access.
Lastly, the weather in this area is unpredictable. you should be prepared for cool, maybe cold mornings and evenings, as well as for rainy and wet conditions. Rain gear, hats, gloves, comfortable hiking shoes, and sunglasses are a must. We will also be potentially wading at some of the waterfalls which means we will get wet. Wading shoes and boots are recommended.
This is not an overtly strenuous trip but we will have some down climbs at some of the waterfalls and will be in and around some rocky areas with steep drop-offs. The waterfall areas are very slick so we will be exercising caution in these areas.
Once you register we will email you an letter with additional information.
Cancellations made before June 1 will receive a full refund, less a 10% administration fee. Cancellations after June 1 will receive credit towards a future workshop but will incur room fees.
