Hi everyone. Please save the date, and join Martin Radigan, Vernon Patterson, and me for our 2018 "Off the Beaten Path" Fall in the West Virginia Highlands Photography Workshop. Fall is a special time in the Highlands, and this exciting workshop in the beautiful Potomac Highlands region of West Virginia, will feature a few of the more traditional locations, but the emphasis will be on getting to new locations that are "off the beaten path". We will be exploring and photographing a diverse landscape that includes expansive mountain top vistas, forests and bogs, to intimate waterfalls. This is a landscape of diversity that offers the opportunity to make dramatic images as well as those that touch on the more intimate and subtle. As always, our shooting locations during the day will be weather dependent. As a special treat we will also be joined by our friend, local area resident, and superb photographer, Vernon Patterson. Vern's local knowledge will ensure our explorations of more "off the beaten" locations.
This Workshop Is Limited to 10 Participants
We will be basing our trips from the beautiful Canaan Valley. This centralized location gives us access to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the West Virginia Highlands including Black Water Falls, Dolly Sods, and the Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge. We will be chasing the light in the early morning and late afternoon to evening.
We will start early each day at around 5:00 AM and shoot until last light around 6:00 PM.
We will be operating out of the Canaan Valley Resort and have set aside a block of rooms for our workshop. Once you register we will send you the lodging information so you can make a reservation. Note that lodging, and meals, are not included in the workshop fee. We will meet in the parking lot at Canaan Valley Lodge at 2:00 pm sharp, June 15, in order to get to our first shooting location.
What to Bring
You will need to bring your DSLR and a selection of lenses ranging from wide-angle to telephoto. A tripod is a must as we will be working with some long exposures. You will also need a polarizing filter and a selection of solid and split neutral density filters is also recommended. Don't forget to bring extra batteries, CF or SD Cards, battery charger and a remote release. Please have a good working knowledge of your camera and its menus. We will be working primarily in Manual Mode throughout this workshop. Once you register we will send out a more complete list along with other trip details.
Lastly, the weather in this area is unpredictable. you should be prepared for cool, maybe cold mornings and evenings, as well as for rainy and wet conditions. Rain gear, hats, gloves, comfortable hiking shoes, and sunglasses are a must. We will also be potentially wading at some of the waterfalls which means we will get wet. Wading shoes and boots are recommended.
This is not an overtly strenuous trip but we will have some down climbs at some of the waterfalls and will be in and around some rocky areas with steep drop-offs. You must be able to walk in to some of the locations, generally less than a mile, and be able to negotiate rocky trails. The longest hike in to a location is 1.3 miles, each way. The waterfall areas are very slick so we will be exercising caution in these areas.
Once you register we will email you an letter with additional information.
Cancellations made before April 16, (60 days prior to the workshop), you will receive a full refund, less a 20% administration fee. Cancellations after April 16 will receive a full refund, less a 20% administration fee, only if we can fill the spot.
